Windows 10 in shades of gray

Thinking about upgrading from Windows version 7 to 10 I have 3 suggestions before you upgrade.

  1. BACKUP your data.
  2. BACKUP your whole computer.
  3. UPDATE every driver & the MB bios

So far I am not a fan of Windows 10. Maybe I'm just to old to get-it? That said, it's running and I'm going to try to deal with it.  Two desktop PCs have been upgraded.

Computer One is a PowerSpec 720 from Microcenter: [specs later] Upgrade was allowed to install with defaults. (BIG mistake)
Computer Two is a home build [specs later] Upgrade began unattended and was interrupted by a hard Power-Off. On restart I chose the tiny little "custom" on the lower left side of the Welcome screen.

PROBLEMS

Computer Two

At first everything seemed to work. Printers, check; internet, check; couple of lightweight programs, check.
Then I went through the settings. I'm really not liking the bright white Windows File Explorer so I waste too much time trying to find AERO. It's gone.
I'm one of those people with many things open at once. All these white tabs are confusing & it's hard to tell where to grab a window to move it.
Shut it down. Go to lunch.

Turn it on - Updates!!! Yay. not

Updates the Intel Ethernet & breaks the connection. Brilliant no? Here's a fix. Don't freak out about this one just yet, but do write it down so you'll have it in case you need it.

UNKNOWN Internet Connection showing a warning triangle over the internet connection icon.

First: Restart the computer.
That may be all it takes. But if that doesn't work follow the 6 easy steps below:
  1. Shut down.
  2. Unplug the ethernet cable
  3. Turn all the way on. Let it sit for a minute. Ignore the red X over the internet icon.
  4. Shut down.
  5. Plug in ethernet cable.
  6. Turn on.
Windows 10 & SSD
I was assured by several geeks that 10 would play well with SSD. Not so. I have not yet revisited my entire SSD Start-Up checklist, but I will be.

Check that the following are OFF / UNCHECKED
  • DEFRAG on the SSD drive(s)
  • Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties

Where is it?

Search for " defrag " or " optimize drives " without the quotes. If only web content is displayed select the My Stuff folder.
Open File Explorer / This PC / select the properties from the context menu of the SSD drive / General tab

Almost everything else is on the context menu of the Start Button. Yep. That was a surprise.

That's it for now. 2015, Sep 01
Update:

Annoying Bugs:

Number Lock state is OFF at LOGIN
all kinds of recommendations regarding editing the registry. The registry keys in question are

  • HKEY_Current_User\ControlPanel\Keyboard\InitialkeyboardIndicators:2147483648
   and
  • HKEY_User\.Default\ControlPanel\Keyboard\InitialkeyboardIndicators\2147483648
Here is what I did: and it's working so far!
Open regedit thru the search tool, and choose Run as Administrator.
Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard: InitialKeyboardIndicators value was "2" (left as-is)
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard: InitialKeyboardIndicators value was "2147483648" (changed to 2147483650)
Below this are several more users 4 are listed & I am the only user of this machine? Anyway if the number is "1" I change it to "2", if "2147483648" change it to "2147483650"

2147483650 = 80000002 (hex) = 2

Jersey Jazzman: Me and Tom Moran

Jersey Jazzman: Me and Tom Moran: I wrote an admittedly stinging piece over at Blue Jersey about Tom Moran's hagiographic treatment of David Tepper, the man behind the money...
